Reversi (Othello)

Reversi, also known as Othello, is played on a standard 8 by 8 board. Share an invite link to play online with a friend, take turns on one device, or choose the computer at Beginner or Advanced level. Free, with no sign-up.

How do you play?

Start with the standard four discs in the center; Black moves first. Place one disc on an empty square so that one or more straight lines of your opponent’s discs are bracketed between the new disc and another of your color. Bracketed discs flip to your color in all eight directions at once. A move must flip at least one disc; there are no chained flips.

What if I cannot move?

If you have no legal move, your turn passes automatically. The game ends when neither player can move. The player with more discs wins; equal counts are a draw.

Can we play another round?

Choose “Play again” after a result. Online, both players must accept. The score carries over and sides switch by default; tap the next-side line to change them.

How to play

  1. Play Reversi (Othello) on a standard 8 by 8 board online with a friend, on one device, or against the computer at Beginner or Advanced level.
  2. Begin with the standard four discs in the center. Black moves first. Place a disc on an empty square that brackets one or more straight lines of opposing discs between the new disc and another of your color.
  3. All bracketed opposing discs flip at once in any of the eight directions. You must flip at least one disc to make a move; flips do not trigger further flips.
  4. If a player has no legal move, their turn passes automatically. The game ends when neither player can move. Count the discs: the player with more wins, and equal counts are a draw.
  5. After a game, choose “Play again” to start another round in the same room. Online, both players must accept. Sides switch by default and the score carries over.
  6. Progress is saved in this browser. Return here to try to resume after a refresh or disconnect; online recovery needs both players to reconnect. Changing devices or clearing browser data can prevent recovery.

Returning to a game

Progress is saved in this browser. For an online game, use the room link in the same browser; both players need to reconnect. Changing browsers, clearing browser data or an expired room can prevent a return. There is no cloud backup of your game.
