Hex

Hex is a connection game on an 11 by 11 board. Share an invite link to play online with a friend, take turns on one device, or choose the computer at Beginner or Advanced level. Free, with no sign-up.

How do you win?

Red moves first and connects the top and bottom red edges; Blue connects the left and right blue edges. Take turns placing a stone in an empty hexagon. Cells sharing an edge are neighbors: join your opposite edges with an unbroken chain to win. Stones stay put and cannot be captured. Hex has no draws.

What is Swap opening?

After Red’s first move, Blue may place a stone or choose “Swap opening” instead. The first stone becomes blue and its row and column are exchanged, reflecting it across the board’s diagonal. This uses Blue’s turn, so Red moves next. This pie rule balances the opening; it is different from switching sides for the next round.

Can I undo or play again?

Online Undo needs your friend’s approval. On one device it reverses one move; against the computer it reverses your move and the reply. Finished games cannot be undone. Undo can also take back the opening swap.

Choose “Play again” after a result. Online, both players must accept. The score carries over and sides switch by default; tap the next-side line to change them.

How to play

  1. Share an invite link, play together on this device, or choose the computer at Beginner or Advanced level.
  2. Red moves first on the 11 by 11 board. Take turns placing one stone in an empty hexagon. Connect the two edges matching your color with a chain of cells sharing an edge to win. The board is shown from your side, so follow the colored edges. Stones stay put and cannot be captured; there are no draws.
  3. After the first Red stone, Blue may choose Swap opening instead of placing. The stone becomes blue and its row and column are exchanged, reflecting it across the board’s diagonal. This uses Blue’s turn; Red moves next. This balances the first move.
  4. On a phone, tap once to preview, then tap the same cell again to place. Use arrow keys and Enter or Space on a keyboard.
  5. Undo and Resign sit below the board. Online Undo needs your friend’s approval. On one device it reverses one move; against the computer it reverses your move and the reply. Finished games cannot be undone. Undo can also take back the opening swap. Resign gives your opponent the round.
  6. Play again keeps the score and alternates sides; online, both players must accept. The result’s next-side swap applies to the next round, not the opening stone.
  7. Progress is saved in this browser. Return here to try to resume after a refresh or disconnect; online recovery needs both players to reconnect. Changing devices or clearing browser data can prevent recovery.

Returning to a game

Progress is saved in this browser. For an online game, use the room link in the same browser; both players need to reconnect. Changing browsers, clearing browser data or an expired room can prevent a return. There is no cloud backup of your game.
